About Derek

Derek was born in Thurles, Tipperary, Ireland where he developed a passion for horses. He grew up riding ponies and was a competitive Steeplechase Jockey in his youth. As a teenager, he began working as an exercise rider and trainee assistant under many prestigious stables throughout Europe. His expertise as an exercise rider and a trainee assistant would bring him to England, Germany, and France before deciding to relocate to the United States to follow his dream of becoming a Thoroughbred Horse Trainer.
Derek has been training Thoroughbred Horses in the United States for over 25 years. He has established himself as a well-respected and fierce competitor up and down the Eastern seaboard.

Irish Jasper Draws Away in Victory Ride
Derek Ryan’s Irish Jasper continued a three-race stakes-winning streak and earned her second Grade 3 in a row July 4, closing with a wide rally and drawing away in the $150,000 Victory Ride Stakes at Belmont Park.
